UPDATED: 5:34 pm EDT September 7, 2005

The American Red Cross is helping at least 1,000 people who have relocated to Louisville from the Gulf Coast.

And with an additional 500 evacuees expected, the city has created a family assistance center at Louisville Gardens, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Julia Harding reported Wednesday.

The center will open Thursday morning, and will offer help in a wide range of areas for people who are in a way starting their lives all over again. Help is being offered for the following services:

  • Drivers' licenses
  • Social Security cards
  • Checking accounts
  • Housing assistance
  • Employment/unemployment
  • Food stamps
  • Medical care
  • School registration

Officials still aren't sure when large numbers of Hurricane Katrina survivors will arrive by plane in Louisville, but the city is ready to accept them. Temporary quarters were set up Monday at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center.

Also, about 400 donated or reduced-rent houses and apartments are available to provide longer-term housing, Harding reported.
