Local Nightclub Scraps Plans For Gators Under Glass

Several Groups Oppose Wet Willy's Plan

A Louisville night spot to be called Wet Willy's has decided to scrap a plan to have a pit of live alligators under a glass dance floor.

The decision came after complaints from neighbors, animal-rights activists and government officials.

Animal Services Director Eric Blow said he sent someone to the club to speak to its owners in November after receiving a tip about the alligators. Later, Blow said the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals became aware of the plan for the pit. Blow said after that, more than 100 complaints arrived from all over the country.

Animal Services visited the site and told one of the owners that the alligator pit would be illegal. An ordinance prohibits the display of wild animals for display or for exhibition purposes, whether gratuitously or for a fee.
