Name Of Officer Killed In Collision Released

Suspect Captured After 6-Hour Search

The name of the LaGrange police officer who was killed while on duty early Wednesday has been released.

Eddie Mundo Jr., 29, a three-year member of the LaGrange Police Department and former U.S. Marine, died in a collision early Wednesday with a fleeing suspect, WLKY NewsChannel 32 reported.

Mundo was married and had a 1-year-old child. Prior to becoming a LaGrange officer, he was a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy from May 1998 to September 2000.

LaGrange Police Chief Kevin Collett said that the nine-member LaGrange Police Department is trying to cope with Mundo's death.

"Right now, I think we're still in shock," Collett said. "It's something you don't ever expect to happen in your department."

Mundo died when his cruiser was hit head-on by a pickup truck driven Gregory Porter, 27, at 2:38 a.m. on Jericho Road about 1.5 miles off Interstate 71.

Just before to the collision, Porter's girlfriend reported a domestic problem to the police; Mundo was one of several officers looking for Porter when Porter rounded a corner and crashed head-on into Mundo's police car, according to police.

After the collision, Porter lifted himself out of his pickup -- despite the airbag deploying -- and left the scene on foot, NewsChannel 32 reported. He was taken into custody about six hours later at the home of Louis Schuler, where he'd stopped to ask for help.

Schuler said Porter admitted that he'd been involved in an accident with a police officer, but said that the officer had been taken to a hospital, according to NewsChannel 32.

Porter was taken to Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange to be treated for unknown injuries.

During the six-hour search, police said Porter called on his cell phone and tried to lead a police helicopter to his location. However, the cell phone battery died, so Porter continued on until arriving at Schuler's home, NewsChannel 32 reported.

Schuler, whose house is about 1 mile from the accident site, said he had not turned on his television Wednesday morning, so he didn't know police were searching for Porter.
