Firefighters' Controversial Day Off Approved
Alderman Claims Decision Is Illegal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- An ordinance to give Louisville firefighters a controversial day off was passed Tuesday evening.
The city's Board of Aldermen voted 9-0 to approve the day off, with one abstention vote from Alderman Dan Johnson.
The firefighters' union said that the vacation day was omitted because of an oversight in the recently signed contract, NewsChannel 32 reported.
Johnson said that the union new its members were losing the day, and that approving the day off would be illegal.
Louisville Mayor Dave Armstrong has 10 days to either sign or veto the measure. However, if he decides to veto, there are enough votes to override it.
Also Tuesday, the aldermen passed a living wage ordinance by a 9-1 vote.
Alderman Cyril Allgeier said that he voted against the ordinance because he believes the incoming council should decide the issue.
