Local Teachers Still Talking Strike Over Health Insurance

Fletcher's New Plan Prompts Concerns

Teachers in Jefferson County are scheduled to meet Wednesday to talk about a possible strike in light of Gov. Ernie Fletcher's new health insurance plan for state workers.

Fletcher released details of the new program Tuesday at the Capitol. It will carry higher deductibles and co-payments.

It also includes, for the first time, discounts for nonsmokers and other incentives for healthy living. And premiums are proportionately lower for employees at the low end of the pay scale.

Brent McKim, president of the Jefferson County Teachers Association, said Fletcher is shifting $150 million in costs to employees. McKim added that he plans to push for a strike vote by the Kentucky Education Association at Wednesday's meeting.

Also Wednesday, about 70 state employees walked through rain to the Capitol in Frankfort to protest the new insurance program.
